Maths
Key stage 3
At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) we follow the Programs of Study set out in the National Curriculum and we take part in national assessments (SATs) at the end of year 9. The Maths Department have shown improvement in their SATs results each and every year since the Academy’s inception and were proud to achieve a Level 5+ for 70% and Level 6+ for 50% of their students in 2009. These improvements have been a result of a dedication to improving the teaching and learning in the department. Currently they are working closely with The University of York in being one of the first maths departments in the UK to implementing new way of teaching mathematics in Years 7 and 8 that has been highly successful overseas. The curriculum that is followed can be found on the national curriculum website. Please click here to view the KS3 Maths curriculum.
Key stage 4
At key Stage 4 (years 10-11) we follow the GCSE course and at the end of Year 11 students will take an examination with the Edexcel board. The results have been improving each year and in 2009 52% of our pupils achieved an A*-C grade with 15% going even further and being awarded an A*-A grade.. Key to achieving these results has been the pupil’s energy and a strong tracking and support system so that no child is left behind. Students who are identified as needing support are offered extra personal tuition and furthermore there are holiday classes available to all students who feel that they need extra help with maths.
We also offer re-takes of GCSE courses in the 6th form for those who have just missed out on the GCSE grades they need to apply to the university of their Choice.

Key stage 5
At Key Stage 5 (6th Form) we currently teach the AQA A-Level syllabus. Pupils complete their AS course in year 12 and A2 in year 13. For those who want to study a mathematical subject at university we offer the opportunity to study Further Maths A-level which runs alongside the standard course throughout years 12 and 13. In addition to this we can also offer the opportunity to take the Advanced Extension Award which will help those students applying to the top universities. The minimum requirement to study A-level Mathematics is a grade B at GCSE. We also offer a range of other opportunities such as the ability to represent Paddington Academy in a national competition with the school maths team and the chance take part in other individual maths challenges.
