Dance Curriculum

Year 7

Gesture:
Students develop an insight on how to develop dance based on gesture. Students will gain an understanding of the basic body actions in dance and will begin to develop an understanding of basic choreography principles.
Contact: Parqour
Developing duet’s and choreographic skills based on Parqour, for example teacher led lifts, holds, slides, balances. Students develop confidence and skills in lifting, and working with others.
Introduction to professional work: Props.
Stomp.
Students analyse professional work, using this as a stimulus. Develop skills and understanding of how to use props within their choreography.
Introduction to professional work: Still life at the penguin café.
Introduction to professional work based on current global issues. Students develop an understanding of how dance can be used as a form of artistic expression.
Cultural Dances:
Students will gain knowledge and understanding of a variety of cultural dance such as,
Bollywood
African
Developing there movement vocabulary.
Cultural Dances:
Students continue to broaden their movement vocabulary and understanding of social dance. They look at where this originated and how this influenced other styles.
Lindy Hop
Jazz dance

Year 8

Lindy Hop:
Students will build on the  knowledge they learnt in year 7. They will develop movement vocabulary and music appreciation. Looking at contact and developing duets.
Students focus on developing performance skills and how you adapt this to the stylistic feature of the dance.
Musical Theatre:
West Side Story
Chicago
Fame
Using musical theatre as our stimulus the students will develop choreography incorporating Jazz technique.
Students develop skills in performance.
Contemporary:
Ghost dances
Students will look at professional work ‘Ghost Dances’ and will explore movement ideas, related to this. Students develop skills in choreography and how to create work from a stimulus.
Ballet:
Swan lake
Manon

Duet work.
Students gain an understanding of the basic techniques in Ballet technique. Students look at professional work and cultural and historical significance.
Dance by chance
Students look at professional choreographer Merce Cunningham. Students develop knowledge of choreography and skills in improvisation.
Puppet: Isolations
Students improvise with the idea of manipulation. Looking at professional work and Hip hop dance group. Students develop skills in isolation and also improvisation and choreography. As well as developing communication skills.

Year 9

Commercial Dance
Students will look at various examples of commercial dance and explore how dance is developed in the professional industry. They will learn set choreography based on various contemporary styles. As part of this unit students will have the opportunity to visit the west end to view current professional commercial production.
Salsa and Jazz:
Students will gain an understanding of the style of Jazz and Salsa and how this relates to music. They will develop technique and begin to understand key Jazz and Salsa vocabulary, ready for BTEC.
South Asian 
Students explore basic South Asian techniques and how they can combine this with there own choreography. Students develop movement vocabulary and cultural knowledge.
Contemporary and Ballet:
Students gain an understanding of Cunningham, graham and release technique. Professional works such as, Swansong and Carmen will be used to explore movement ideas.
Students look at the differences and similarities of ballet and contemporary, developing their knowledge and understanding of the two core styles. 
Choreography:
Students develop knowledge of the choreographic process. They use choreographic devices and begin to understand structure of choreography, through workshops and improvisational tasks.
Choreography Project:
Students use images as their stimulus. Students create there own group and solo choreography. Students develop skills in improvisation, how to select and refine movement
