YEAR 7 ENGLISH LEARNING OVERVIEW 2011-2012

AUTUMN TERM 1
7th September-21st October

AUTUMN TERM 2
31st October-16th December

Superheroes

During the first spring term, students will study the superhero genre, paying close attention to the conventions of the graphic novel in which superhero stories traditionally appear. Students will be assessed on their mise-en-scene analysis from The Hulk, and will create their own superhero comic sketch around their own superhero.

Contemporary Novel: Skellig
Students read and study David Almond’s story which won the Whitbread Children’s book of the Year and was also made into a film starring Tim Roth in 2009. We analyse language and structure and use the story as inspiration for students to write creatively and imaginatively themselves.

SPRING TERM 1
4th January-10th February

SPRING TERM 2
20th February-30th March

Media: Advertising of Coca-Cola
This unit of work focuses on the students’ awareness of advertising and its role in the media. We take Coca-Cola as a case study and, as well as investigating the company’s history, write an essay comparing two television advertisements to see how differently they present their message.

Contemporary Drama: Burning Everest
Burning Everest is a contemporary play by Adrian Flynn about a 13-year-old boy placed in care by his mother. Students will study the play, reading for meaning and investigating the writer’s viewpoint and how he communicates this. After studying the conventions of script writing, students will also create their own scripted scene from the play. This unit also provides a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their drama skills in small performance pieces.

SUMMER TERM 1
17th April-1st June

SUMMER TERM 2
11th June-19th July

Traditional Novel:
After surveying the students of Yr 7 on their reading tastes and experiences, each class will choose a novel from the rich heritage of 18th and 19th Century literature. Reading assessments will focus on how novelists structure their work and writing assessments will be on adapting your writing to a range of different audiences and purposes.

Poetry: Mystery and Mayhem
Students study a fun and exciting collection of modern and traditional poetry around the themes of mystery and mayhem. We will analyse different forms and focus on the techniques used by poets to create meaning and atmosphere. Students will be assessed on their understanding through a combination of creative writing and analysis. This unit begins to introduce some key skills for GCSE English.
