Introduction to instrumental playing in ensembles

This term, students are given the opportunity to play a variety of instruments in small ensembles to develop their instrumental and teamwork skills.

 

Introduction to the Elements of Music and Music Technology

The aim of this topic is to raise students’ awareness of the elements of music e.g. pitch, rhythm and tempo.  During the term, students are taught how to play a song on the keyboard and introduced to the idea of arranging music using a program on the school’s Apple Mac computers.

The History of Music

This topic is designed to raise students’ awareness of different periods in classical musical history.  Their awareness is developed through a variety of listening and performance tasks.

A continuation of the previous term’s work but through the study of more recent periods of musical history

Ensemble Drumming

Students are taught to play a variety of percussion instruments within both whole class and small group drumming ensembles.   They are also given the opportunity to compose their own drumming piece.

 

Song composition

The elements of music are revisited in greater depth here to consolidate the knowledge and understanding of music that students’ developed throughout the year.  Furthermore, they are given the opportunity to perform and record the work they have composed.
