Unit 1:  Setting up a Business

Topic: Enterprise
To introduce students to business, we look at entrepreneurship and the qualities and skills of business people. We also ask what the aims and objectives of businesses are and how business leaders go about identifying gaps in the market.    
Unit 1:  Setting up a Business
Topic: Marketing
One of the central elements of business is marketing, and students will need to have a firm grasp of the marketing mix, market research techniques, and how to apply these to real business scenarios.

Unit 1:  Setting up a Business

Topic: Business Finance
Whatever businesses aim to do, it’s often the bottom line that counts. Students will learn how to calculate whether a business is making a profit or a loss and how to create and analyse a cash flow forecast. They will also be able to advise businesses on how to improve their cash flow.    
Unit 1:  Setting up a Business
Topic: Recruitment
Students will learn how businesses go about hiring the right staff, motivating them to work hard and keeping them happy in their jobs. They will also look at how employees are protected by law in terms of equal pay, non-discrimination and the minimum wage.

Unit 1:  Setting up a Business

Topic: Operations Management
The final topic is about how businesses need to adapt their production methods to the goods they are offering. Students will learn about job and batch production, efficiency, the use of technology in manufacturing and quality control. (EXAM)
Unit 3:  Investigating Businesses

Controlled Assessment
After the Unit 1 exam, students will begin preparations for a piece of Controlled Assessment. The business content and question for this changes each year. Students will be taught the relevant material and then independently complete a three hour assessment over several sessions.
