ECONOMICS GCSE LEARNING OVERVIEW 2010-2011

AUTUMN TERM 1 6th September-22nd October	AUTUMN TERM 2 1st November-17th December
Unit 1: How the market works. This is the first of three papers for GCSE economics. It gives students an introduction to the basic ideas of microeconomics - how individual households, businesses and consumers make economic decisions. Topics covered will include: What is the economic problem? What are competitive markets? and How do firms operate in competitive markets?	Unit 1: How the market works. We aim to finish this introductory unit by the end of the winter term, and we will also begin to include exam practise. Topics covered will include: What is the economic problem? SPRING TERM 1 5th January-18th February	SPRING TERM 2 28th February-8th April
Unit 2: How the economy works. The second unit is an introduction to macroeconomics - when economists study whole national economies, using ideas such as inflation, unemployment, booms and recessions. Topics covered will include: What are the economic objectives of a government? How does the UK government raise and spend its money? Which policies can the UK government use?	Unit 2: How the economy works. We aim to finish this introductory unit by the end of the spring term, and we will also begin to include exam practise. Topics covered will include: What are the economic objectives of a government? How does the UK government raise and spend its money? Which policies can the UK government use?
SUMMER TERM 1 25th April-27th May	SUMMER TERM 2 6th June-22nd July
Revision term: Unit 1: How the market works; and Unit 2: How the economy works. In this term we will revise and bring together the learning over these two papers. Lessons will include exam practise and technique.	We may be able to sit the GCSE exam for one of these units at the end of year 10 in June, though this will depend on our teachers' judgement as to whether classes are ready to sit the exam early. At the end of the term, we will begin to introduce the final unit of GCSE Economics: Unit 3: The UK economy and globalisation.
