School Council

Schools with effective school councils are a good place to be because the demonstrate that

  • The school has a culture of respect for rights and responsibilities
  • A lot of listening goes on, both by students and by teachers
  • Relationships between teachers and students improve

At Paddington Academy we have an evolving structure for student voice within which the school council is becoming the centre.
Tutor Councils meet in week one and involve the whole Tutor group so every student in the school is a member of their own Tutor council . Issues from the Tutor council are taken to the Year council  by selected year reps and then to the management group where the agenda for School Council meetings are set. This in turn feeds back to all Tutor reps through a second year meeting. Feedback to the tutor group completes the cycle.
Nominations for Tutor reps take place in the first two weeks of term and follow a democratic process of nomination and elections which are included in Tutor packs issued at the start of the school year.
It is the tutors responsibility to ensure that the elections take place fairly and that agendas are set and minutes made for the regular meetings during Tutor time.
Each half term the councils also meet with the Principal to feed back Student Voice.
